A juvenile grey heron with a bank vole.

I wondered whether to post this image. It was hard to watch but equally interesting to observe nature in action. It was unfortunate for the bank vole, but the heron has to eat to survive. As has been said by wildlife experts we shouldn’t demonise the predator.

I’ve watched this young heron two or three times and s/he is quite a character who likes a varied diet of fish, bank voles, frogs and insects. It was interesting to see a feisty moorhen chase off the heron when s/he got a little too close. The heron took flight and kept a respectful distance.
