GREAT SPOTTED WOODPECTER (Juv.) // DENTROCOPUS MAJOR (24cm)

GREAT SPOTTED WOODPECTER (Juv.) // DENTROCOPUS MAJOR (24cm)

JUVENILE, is getting very brave, and more trusting, its markings are similar to the adult male, but note the red crown and it has a subdued red vent colour, only partly visible in this image. Widespread and fairly good numbers in southern and central England and Wales, less numerous further north. Resident in woodlands and will take to gardens with peanut feeders, always get excited on seeing them.
